A get well poem from me to you?

We know that you've had surgery
And been gone for long enoughto gather our attention.
So you can see, we've signed this poem, and folded it to send,With wishes for recovery, for you to heal and mend.
You might be kind of wondering why we would make this fuss. The truth is that we miss you much and want you back with us!

Get well soon Ms Hughes!

A Message for Awesome Room 14

Hi everyone

I just wanted to say another thank you for the shared lunch and all the prayers, cards and lovely wishes.

I'm doing really well.  So well, that I've been allowed to come home.  I wasn't supposed to be able to do this until Friday - great example of what positive thinking and prayers can do.

You said to me the other day that you were all standing behind me keeping me strong - it truly worked!!  I will now keep working hard to get better really quickly and be back with you in no time at all.

I will see how I feel later in the week - I might be okay to come for a very short visit - you'll be able to laugh at my hairstyle and bandage.  (They only shaved a tiny bit of hair).

Missing all of you very much but I know you're working really hard and continuing to put a huge effort into your learning.

See you soon
Miss H :-)

Thank You to my 'Other Family'

Hi everyone.

I don't really know where to start in thanking you for the lovely lunch and beautiful cards, thoughts, prayers and wishes all of you have given me.

You are all right - we are family and we get so much strength from each other.

I know I will see all of you very soon - seeing you today and yesterday just reinforced how much I miss teaching and learning with you, the laughs, our challenges and the fun we have learning together.  It also made me even more determined to get better and be back with you as soon as possible.

Keep working hard and believing in yourselves - I always believe in you!!

Love and best wishes - and thank you to all of you and Mrs K.

How Do We Create A Community At School?

Hi everyone

Given your exploration of communities so far and your thinking around what the word 'community' means, what are some of the ways that we have created a community in our classroom / learning environment over the past 18 months?

Looking forward to reading at least 28 posts!!! ;-)

Greetings to all my fabulous teachers and learners

Hi everyone

I'm sorry I haven't been on for a wee while.  Missing you guys enormously - as big as the universe and beyond!!!

Please don't get grumpy with each other.  I know it's really hard at the moment but life's like that and we can either become part of the problem or part of the solution.  (You knew that was coming aye!)  We are an amazing team of teachers and learners and we are way stronger than this.

Remember, you have lots of authors on the blog now, but I will also go on here and post questions about the current inquiry if that will help :-)

I have one condition though - all of you need to contribute to the discussions I post - deal??  ;-)  The blog will be our way to keep in touch with and support each other.

I love the idea of the poetry competition - get that going too.  You are all very independent learners.  Come on guys, we can do this!  It's a cool way of me being able to keep in touch with you and your learning but, more importantly with you as my wonderful class of superkids!!

Missing you a lot and I will be back the minute I am able to - you know that.

Miss H :-)

I know there's already been 2 posts for you Miss Hughes (Rhiannon and Deighkotah), but I'd like to say get well soon also!

It's been very up and down, muddly and confusing (for me, anyway) lately in Room 14.
But hey...

We all miss you lots!!

Greetings and a big hug to all the fantastic teachers and learners in Room 14!

Hi everyone

Just wanted to pop in and say a big hello and send virtual hugs to all of you.
Thank you so much for the cards and I'm loving all the messages on here.
I am missing you soooooo much - home is very boring compared to teaching and learning with all of you.
Please don't worry because I will be absolutely fine.  I will try and come in to see you on Friday.

I hope you're continuing to put a huge effort into your learning - like you always do.  I will go on your individual blogs and add lots of comments so make sure you're keeping up with recording your learning on here.

Hugs and best wishes and I will see you soon.

Miss H :-)

Monica and her wonderful friends

These are Monica's friends.
This is what she has to say:  We should keep in contact so we don't lose our friendship.
And come to Korea and visit me.
Don't forget me please.
And that's it from me, hopefully I see you in Korea.

A big welcome to Monica.

Monica is an international student - she's from a country called Cheonan in Korea.  It's not a well known country in Korea but here's a little bit about her.

I have a mom, dad and younger brother.  My school in Korea is called: Branksome Hall Asia and it's an international school and it is placed at Je Ju island.  I have enjoyed New Zealand so far.  I have been here for two weeks and leave in the next two weeks on Saturday.  In New Zealand I stay with Logan my home stay Dad and home stay mum Michelle and younger home stay brother Lucas.  They welcomed me into their home.  Lucas is like a brother to me he always comes to my room and says "Let's play together".  I am going to miss him when I leave and can't wait to find out if I'm coming back.  And that's about me.
I  hope to see our class again. Let's keep in touch.

What's Your Number

Here's an interesting link that Mr Cowan sent all of the teachers today.  It tells you what the global population was at the time you were born.

You just need to add in the month you were born, the date and the year and it will calculate and tell you how many people were on this amazing planet at the time you were born.  Pretty cool!

Check it out at...

A Reminder

Tomorrow you need to bring:
  • Something from another country
  • Something that is special in your family
  • Something that is made in another country
You don't have to bring one of each - these are just ideas.

Please remember and, if something is too special to bring  you can take a photo of it and bring that along.

TERM 3 INQUIRY / CONCEPT

Hi everyone

This term's inquiry is around Digital and Global Citizenship.

I have some questions for you to get you thinking:

1)  Who or what is a 'citizen'?
2)  Who is a Digital Citizen?
3)  Who is a Global Citizen?

Think about what these terms mean to you.  We will talk about this some more tomorrow and start to brainstorm all the vocabulary that might go along with these terms and ideas / concepts.

Interesting Sun Shots

While I was out on duty this morning, I had a lot of students come running up to me asking what the ring around the sun was.  When I looked, there was a huge ring around the sun - I've seen rings around the sun and the moon before but this was something else!  It was HUGE!!!!!!!!!

Have a look and see what you think.  What caused this??  Click on the links to the Google Docs below - some of the Room 14 students have been busy using their research skills.

You can see how big the ring was from this photo!

A Warning...an Update...and the power of an Online Learning Community!

Hi everyone

Something has been added to our blog in some way - it's a link underneath MyChatPack.  DO NOT CLICK ON THIS!

I have contacted Blogger to find out how to remove it as it doesn't appear to have any html associated with it.  Hopefully they will deal with it straight away.

Just one of those things when working digitally.

UPDATE

Remember this afternoon, I posted a question to the online learning forum about this?  Well, I've had lots of answers and support and the offending link has been removed!  This is the power of teaching and learning in the digital age and learning in an online learning community.   When you're stuck or not sure about how to do something, help is only a quick post away in a learning forum!!

How can we use this power to help us in our daily learning - through an online learning community!  This is also what I started to talk to you about today.  More to come in the next few days....................

I can relax now, just like Gracie........

Hi Team!

Hi everyone!!

Two more sleeps and we're back at school ready for more fantastic teaching and learning challenges!!

I hope you've all had a good break and are ready to push your teaching and learning even further than you already have this year.

What do you really want to achieve this Term?  Look at how far you've already come.  Set your goals high.  We will be looking at your progress over the past 18 months and looking at where you need to head next and what we can do as a teaching and learning team to help each other achieve those goals.

I'd love to hear what you've been doing over the break so jump online and add your comments.

See you on Monday!

Creative Commons Search

We are developing our awareness of what we can and cannot use and share on the Net.  There is a whole lot of learning around Copyright, etc.

The tool below - click on the link, and I'll also put it on the sidebar - is a really cool way to avoid getting into difficulty over Copyright.  (Its all part of being a Responsible learner - part of R2P2GC in action!)

The Room Nine Einsteins

Check out this news programme produced by a school in Dunedin.

They'd love some feedback on what they've created.  Remember to include constructive feedback.

Today we had two very special visitors and we hope they will come back and visit us as often as they can.
We can't believe how fast Mrs Meldau's gorgeous girl is growing!!
I think we should add some captions!
Mrs Meldau was our teacher for the first term of 2012 and we miss her, so it was fantastic to catch up with her and her gorgeous daughter.

Last Weekend's Learning

Last weekend I went to EducampChCh to share MyChatPak and also to push my own learning further.  Everyone loved what all of you have been doing with MyChatPak and how confident you're becoming in sharing your learning with others.  I felt very proud of the effort you put into your learning and it's fantastic for others to be able to see what I see every day!

I've included the Google Presentation from the day for you to have a look at.  There are some incredible tools that we can use in the classroom but we need to keep in mind - always - the central question - What impact will this tool have on teaching and learning?  If it doesn't have a positive impact then is it just a 'cool tool'?  We need to be able to be clear about the learning behind the tool.

Have a really close look at the SAMR model of technology integration - I really loved this and learned such a lot about it.  This may be the tool that we use to decide on the impact of a particular tool or app that we want to use in our teaching and learning.

As always - I'm really looking forward to hearing YOUR thoughts.  You always make me think more deeply and critically about what I do in teaching and learning.

Week 8 Prep for Learning

Hi everyone

Your Prep for Learning this week is much the same as last week as you will be really getting into your Inquiries around Conquest.
This will be your reading as you research and take notes about your area of interest.

For maths, please continue to use Studyladder with a focus on FRACTIONS this week.

Spelling - get those words into Spelling City and use the tools on there, along with the strategies in class, to help you know and understand how the words work.

Have an awesome week and keep working hard and focusing on your goals.

Amazing Initiative of The News Crew

I am speechless with pride in my students.  Click on the News Crew link below and see what you think of the news channel that some of our amazing class members have just set up.

This is completely their own initiative - they were not required to do this.  I am your very proud and humbled teacher.  This is just another example of why you are outstanding students - and human beings.

I also saw your reactions to the Anti-bullying presentation today and had great respect for all of you.  Our future is bright if you are in charge.

Sparkol VideoScribe Tutorial 1: Creating Your First Scribe

Here is a cool new tool for you to try.  I've got it on trial for 7 days but I will need to log you in under my name at school to trial it.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you think.  Remember to be critical teachers and learners.  The tool doesn't decide the learning.  It supports the learning.
How would you use this to show what you are learning or what you have learned?  I'm looking forward to your ideas.

My Learning Day at Educamptt

Hi everyone!  I had a fantastic time at Educamptt in Whangarei.  Have a look at the Google Presentation below and see what tools you could use in your learning.  Remember, they can't just be 'cool tools', you need to justify their use in your learning.
Looking forward to hearing what you think - just click on the images and the links will open.

Prep For Learning for Week 7 - WEEK 7!!!!???? Can you believe it??

Hi everyone!
I hope you've all had good weekends and are ready to push your learning as far as it can go again this week.

Your Prep for Learning is simple this week:

  • Read, read, read......
  • Maths - online on Studyladder - please use classroom computers if there are computer issues at home :-)
  • Speeches - we're working hard to complete these by Wednesday and then start presenting on Friday - don't panic about these.  We can use MyChatPak to help you develop confidence.
  • Inquiry / Concept - you've narrowed down your question.  Now is the time to research.  We'll be recapping the tools an effective researcher needs on Monday and Tuesday.  Use time at home to read and research.

Have an awesome week and keep Striving to Achieve!!
